Get caffeine and cozy in 2 minutes with this Cinnamon Mocha Hot Cocoa; A delicious and sugar free hot chocolate coffee drink that can be made on the stovetop or in the microwave too! Perfect for a cold winter morning or night.
Jump to RecipeI don’t actually drink coffee – not a fan of that bitterness at all, but I always have instant coffee on hand just for all these recipes.
And of course the best way to cover up that taste – chocolate 🙂 Maybe that’s why mocha has its own name too!
What is the difference between mocha and hot chocolate?
The main difference between a hot mocha recipe and a hot chocolate is that the former has coffee along with the chocolate, while the latter does not.
Cinnamon Mocha Hot Cocoa Ingredients
This homemade cinnamon mocha hot chocolate is actually healthy and better than the Starbucks version since it’s sweetened with stevia, so there’s no sugar.
Here’s everything you need for this sugar free hot chocolate coffee recipe:
- Unsweetened Almond Milk, or any other non dairy or regular milk
- Raw cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa
- Instant coffee which gives the mocha flavor when combined with the chocolate
- Ground Cinnamon
- Stevia powder as a sweetener for the sugar free hot cocoa, but you can use regular sugar here as well
- Pure Vanilla Extract
- Optional, but I like to add Dark Chocolate Chips or chopped chocolate for a richer flavor. I’d recommend Lily’s for a sugar-free version.
Which cocoa powder is best for hot chocolate?
Since you want a rich cocoa flavor in this hot chocolate coffee drink, I highly recommend using raw cacao powder or a good quality unsweetened cocoa powder.
How to make Cinnamon Mocha Hot Chocolate:
This homemade hot chocolate recipe is not only absolutely delicious with all the coffee and cinnamon, but is also extremely easy to make in the microwave or on the stovetop.
Make Stovetop Cinnamon Hot Chocolate:
- Heat up and whisk together the milk and water in a small pot over medium heat.
- When it starts to simmer, add in the cacao powder, instant coffee, cinnamon, vanilla and sweetener and whisk.
- Let it simmer again. You want just small bubbles, make sure you don’t let it boil over.
- Then add chocolate chips or chopped chocolate, whisk again, and pour it into your mug.
For a 2 minute Microwave Mocha Hot Cocoa recipe:
To make a cinnamon mocha coffee in the microwave, blend all the ingredients in a high speed blender, transfer it to a mug, and then heat it up in the microwave for about 1 or 2 minutes.
You can also whisk all the ingredients in the mug itself and then microwave it. Be sure to use a (small) whisk in this case and not a spoon.
For the blender version, I would recommend doubling the recipe so you don’t waste anything from what sticks to the blender itself.
Serving ideas for this Chocolate Coffee Drink recipe:
