I just found a way to save some money on those weekly grocery runs. Homemade Whole Wheat Pita Bread! Its a 3-ingredient – one of which is water – recipe and is super basic.
Jump to RecipeWhile saving money was definitely a priority here, the main reason I sought this pita bread recipe was because I couldn’t find a good whole wheat pita bread in the store.
What’s a good pita bread?
- Whole Wheat (only)
- Low sodium
- No oil
- No sugar
- Fewer carbs per piece
I try to stick to whole grains as much as possible – more like all the time to be honest – and most of the options available in the store had some amount of white flour in them as well.
And the ones I did find that were just purely whole wheat flour had either too much of salt in them, or too many carbs, or both! I could probably fit in 1, at most 2, into my meal, but I love my carb-y foods so 1-2 is a bit too little for me.
Sugar and oil? Why?!
How to make pita bread?
I was quite afraid to try this because I’d never made bread before, but needs. And also the recipe was quite simple.
Just a few things to note though.
- You can use Active Dry Yeast or Instant Yeast for this recipe
- Active Dry Yeast: Combine yeast with water in a bowl
- Instant Yeast: Stir yeast together with flour
- Add the water a little at a time.
- DO NOT OVER-KNEAD. Go until its all just mixed in. The bread will turn out tough if you do.
- Roll (lightly) the dough just thin enough, but not too thin or they wont be a pocket.
- Let the rolled dough rest for 30 minutes so it has time to rise.
- DO flip the dough before you bake it. If not, bread will not rise and puff up, and will also remain stuck to the bottom of the pan.
The result:
Baked for a short 5 minutes, the breads turned out just as I was hoping for. Soft, chewy, and yummy.
That pocket happened too. I was very happy.
Now I can have my carbs healthy whenever I want, and for a cheap price too!
Things to have this with:
Dips and hummus. Here’s healthy options: Fat-free hummus, Spiced beet dip
As a pita sandwich. Try these falafels.
Just plain buttered and toasted!

So three of 10 puffed up. Any idea why?
This pita bread is so good. It is so easy to make too! My only issue is getting the pockets to form. But it is so good that I don’t care that much.
