Jump to RecipeSo this recipe is actually a revamped version of a peanut butter hot cocoa I made last winter. I thought I’d just update that blog post with new pictures and keep the recipe the same, but when I followed it to the t, I realized I could make it SO much better!
Upped the amount of peanut butter in there and also added in some real chocolate – so much richer and more indulgent!
Make a giant mug of this drink for a quick treat on a cold day so you can feel all warm and snuggly on the inside. Sure to forget all about the chilly weather beyond those walls.
Ingredients for Healthy Peanut Butter Hot Cocoa Recipe
This homemade peanut butter hot chocolate is much healthier than what you could get in a store since it’s made with raw cacao or cocoa power and sweetened with stevia, so there’s no sugar.
Here’s everything you need:
- Unsweetened Almond Milk, or any other non dairy or regular milk
- Water – you could use more milk here, but even the water makes it creamy since you add chocolate and creamy peanut butter
- Raw cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa
- Creamy Peanut Butter
- Stevia powder as a sweetener to keep this hot chocolate completely sugar free, but you can use regular sugar here as well
- Pure Vanilla Extract
- Dark Chocolate Chips or chopped chocolate for a rich chocolate flavor. I recommend Lily’s for sugar-free.
For a vegan peanut butter hot chocolate
Since this recipe already uses almond milk and cacao powder for the chocolate flavor, the only thing you need to make this a Vegan hot cocoa is dairy free chocolate chips.
Check the nutrition label in your chocolate and make sure there’s no milk product.
Another alternative is to use extra cacao or cocoa powder, and avoid the chocolate entirely.
How to make Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate?
This really is an easy peanut butter hot chocolate recipe because all you need to do is heat and combine the combine all the ingredients. You do need to keep an eye on it though so you don’t end up with something burnt.
- Heat up and whisk together the milk, water, cacao powder, vanilla and sweetener in a small pot over medium heat.
- Let it start to simmer. You want just small bubbles, make sure you don’t let it boil over.
- Then add in the peanut butter and chocolate chips, whisk again, and pour it into your mug.

To make Peanut Butter Hot Chocolate in the Microwave
This recipe works really well for a microwave peanut butter hot chocolate too; Just blend all the ingredients in a high speed blender, transfer it to a mug, and then heat it up in the microwave for about 1 or 2 minutes depending on how cold your milk was.
I could recommend using slightly warm milk here, and also double or triple batch the recipe so you don’t waste anything from what sticks to the blender itself.
Can we have peanut butter with milk?
While it is possible to have just a plain peanut butter drink with warm milk and extra peanut butter, you get a much more healthy option by adding the cacao powder. This is because avoid the extra fats and hence get a slightly low calorie drink too.
The chocolate also adds a lot of rich flavor.
What to put in Hot Cocoa to make it better?
If you’re here, you already know that adding peanut butter to hot cocoa makes it a lot better; Chocolate and peanut butter really is an unbelievably good combination!
I’ve also got chocolate chips in here for a second up-your-game.
If you want some more added bonus, top it with some sugar-free marshmallows, light sweetened whipped cream, and even sugar free chocolate syrup. I would recommend
