Crunchy, chocolatey but Healthy Protein Ferrero Rocher perfect for a homemade Christmas or sweet indulgent treat! Made with homemade Nutella, these Ferrero Rocher truffles are sugar-free, gluten-free, low carb and Vegan too!
Jump to RecipeFerrero Rocher was definitely one of my top 2 favorite chocolate candies of all time. The other being Snickers.
So now that I checked the protein Snickers off my list and made some homemade Nutella, this homemade Ferrero Rocher was just a need! I guess you can also call them crunchy Protein Nutella truffles?
Nutrition label wise it does have more calories than the original store-bought candy, but all the macros on this one are WAY better.
High protein, low carb, high fiber, extremely low sugar (pretty much sugar-free).
And the taste? Let’s just say if I weren’t balancing macros, the entire batch of 14 would be gone in under 5 minutes.
Ingredients for Healthy Protein Ferrero Rocher Truffles
These healthy homemade Ferrero Rocher candy are made with Nutella, chocolate protein powder and cacao for the chocolate flavor and have no Oreos. Unlike most other truffles out there that use Nutella.
Here’s everything you need:
- Nutella – also known as Hazelnut Cocoa Spread. I used my homemade Nutella recipe here.
- Rolled Oats or Instant Oats. Be sure to use the glutenfree version if you have the restriction.
- Chocolate Protein Powder – All my protein treats are Quest protein powder recipes, so this is the one I used.
- Raw Cacao Powder or Unsweetened Cocoa
- Unsweetened Almond Milk for dairy free and Vegan truffles because they already have no cream and no butter either.
- Whole roasted Hazelnuts for that center
And for the chocolate coating:
- Sugar free Dark Chocolate or just chocolate chips, so there’s no added sugar here. I’d recommend Lily’s
- A bit of Coconut Oil to smoothen the coating
- Finely chopped Hazelnuts
How to make Homemade Ferrero Rocher with Nutella
These chocolate hazelnut truffles are a no bake and no cook recipe – just mix, roll and dunk – making them quite easy protein energy bites!
- If you’re using rolled oats, place oats in a food processor and process them until they shred to form a rough flour. You don’t want the completely fine oat-flour.
- Transfer it to a bowl, add in the chocolate protein powder and cacao or cocoa powder and mix.
- Now add in the Nutella and mix again. You should have a crumbly, slightly dry mix.
- Pour in the almond milk and mix it all. The chocolate truffle mixture should now hold together.
- Spoon out some of the mix, about a tablespoon worth, and roll shape it into a disc using your (clean) hands.
- Place a hazelnut in the middle, shape the batter around it and then use your palms to roll into balls.
If you use instant oats, you can just skip the food processor and mix all the ingredients in a bowl – an easy one bowl chocolate Nutella truffle recipe!
And now for the chocolate truffles coating:
- Place the chopped chocolate and coconut oil in a shallow bowl and microwave for about 1 minute – at 30 second intervals – until it’s completely melted.
- Stir in the chopped hazelnults – you want them fine.
- Place the nutella protein balls in the melted chocolate, one at a time, and use 2 forks to roll around so they’re completely coated in the chocolate.
- Shake off the excess chocolate and place the Ferrero Rocher balls on a parchment-lined baking sheet to harden.
How to store Homemade Ferrero Rocher Balls
These healthy protein Ferrero Rocher work for a great meal prep dessert or snack!
You can keep them at room temperature in airtight container for about 3 days.
For something longer, keep the Nutella protein bites in the fridge for about a week. Use an airtight container again.
These also make great freezer friendly protein chocolate treats too! Place them in an airtight sealed container and they should be good for 2-3 months. Be sure to let them thaw on the counter before eating!
Some alternate ingredients for Chocolate Hazelnut Truffles
I made these Nutella energy bites with oats and chocolate protein powder, but you can easily substitute these with vanilla protein powder and some almond flour too!
Here’s how to go about it, and also some other healthy ingredient swaps.
- Replace the chocolate protein powder with vanilla protein powder instead, and add a bit more cacao powder. You might need to add some sweetener depending on how sweet your protein powder is. I’d recommend stevia powder or sugar-free maple syrup.
- Use almond flour in place of the shredded oats. You might need a little more here – about ⅔ cup – or reduce the milk to 2-3 tablespoons instead. With the almond flour option you also have a recipe for keto Ferrero Rocher balls!
- Any other non-dairy or regular milk will also work in place of the almond milk, but be sure to use the dairy-free ones to keep the Nutella protein balls Vegan.
- Feel free to add some stevia sweetener or teaspoon or so of maple syrup if you want sweeter Ferrero protein balls.
