Jump to RecipeI’ve really gotten into the whole sugar free and oil free dessert recipes recently because they work so well for my post workout meal.
That’s actually where this chocolate banana bread came in – it’s low fat because it has no oil and also high in protein because of the protein power.
And plus, it’s chocolate so come on. Who wouldn’t want to have a thick slice of this goodness just after their morning workout?
Well I actually had 2 so….
Need to hear more?
I baked 2 of these loaves back to back, and once in the middle of a workout just so this could be my post-workout treat!
Ingredients for 100-Calorie Chocolate Protein Banana Bread
This healthy high protein chocolate banana banana is made with clean and simple ingredients like whole meal flour, protein powder and non-fat greek yogurt
For the wet ingredients:
- Mashed Banana from completely ripe and browned bananas
- Almond Milk – no milk or buttermilk needed here
- Non-fat Greek Yogurt a high protein low fat banana bread. If you want this recipe dairy free, use coconut yogurt or another non dairy yogurt
- Eggs
- A bit of Vanilla Extract
And for the fry ingredients:
- Whole wheat pastry flour which gives it the light texture, bit still keeps this recipe healthy because of the whole grain from the whole wheat
- Chocolate Protein Powder; This is the source of protein and sweetness in the protein powder banana bread since there’s no added sugar in this recipe.
- Cacao Powder or unsweetened cocoa powder
- Baking Powder
How to make Healthy Banana Bread with Chocolate Protein Powder and Greek Yogurt
Besides being a healthy whole wheat banana bread, this recipe is also really easy!
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a loaf pan with parchment paper. I used an 8½” x 4½”.
- Whisk all the wet ingredients in a bowl: mashed banana, almond milk, yogurt, eggs and vanilla.
- Whisk all the dry ingredients in another bowl: whole wheat flour, chocolate protein powder, cacao or cocoa powder and baking powder.
- Add the dry mix to the wet and gently fold to combine. Just be gentle and don’t over-mix the batter. The gluten from the whole wheat flour or the protein powder will make it too dense.
You should have a thick, but pourable batter.
- Pour the batter into the pan and bake for 40 + 15/20 minutes. After the 40 minutes, cover the pan with a foil tent and bake for the remaining 15-20 minutes.
Insert a toothpick, tester or thin knife and make sure it comes out dry.
You can also turn these into chocolate protein banana muffins – use a 12 cup muffin pan and bake for about 22-25 minutes.
Why do you cover chocolate protein banana bread with foil when baking?
Protein powder is quite sensitive to heat and can make baked goods start to brown a lot quicker than normal.
To prevent the banana bread from burning and browning at the top before the center is cooked though, we cover it with a foil tent partway through the bake.
This way the center will have enough time to cook, and keep the top safe too!
Can you store Protein Powder Greek Yogurt Banana Bread?
This moist banana bread keeps really well and is great for a meal prep snack, breakfast or post-workout treat, because it’s freezer friendly too.
You can keep the protein powder banana bread out at room temperature for about 3 days in an airtight container.
To store in the fridge, use an airtight container and it will last for about a week.
To freeze the banana bread, cut it into slices, wrap each slice in plastic wrap, and place them in a freezer-safe zipper bag.
You can even store the whole loaf itself – be sure to let it thaw before you slice.
Can you make Chocolate Protein Powder Banana Bread with Frozen Bananas?
I made this banana bread twice – once with ripened bananas from the counter, and the second time with browned bananas that were frozen as a whole. I did not try the recipe with sliced frozen bananas, so I can’t say how that would turn out.
To make banana bread with frozen bananas, first let the banana thaw completely to room temperature, then mash and use them in the recipe as you normally would.
I would not recommend defrosting it in the microwave. Let this happen naturally.
What Protein Powder to use for Chocolate Banana Bread?
I used a whey-caesin blend chocolate protein powder from Quest Nutrition for this recipe, but you can use whey protein powder too.
I haven’t tried the pea protein or other plant based ones, so I can’t say how those would work here.
Be sure to use one sweetened with stevia or monk fruit if you want a proper sugar free recipe.
Can you have Banana Bread for Post Workout?
This low calorie chocolate banana bread is a great post workout treat since it’s a high protein and low fat recipe made with Greek yogurt and Protein powder and has no oil and no butter either.
While it does use whole wheat flour, there isn’t too much fiber per slice to actually slow down the absorption of those carbs – unlike a lot of protein bars on the market. So go right ahead and have 2 slices of this if you’d like!

- Pour batter into prepared loaf pan.
- Bake for 55-60 minutes, covering with a foil tent after 40 minutes.
- A toothpick inserted into center should come out dry.
- Cool for 15 minutes, then lift out of pan using the lining. Transfer to a wire rack to cool completely, about 30 minutes and cut into slices.
Notes
- For a dairy free recipe, use coconut yogurt (recipe will not be fat-free in this case).
- To replace whole wheat pastry flour, use all-purpose flour.
- Do not over mix the batter or too much gluten will develop because of the whole wheat flour, giving a gummy texture. Protein powder could also get over-mixed and give a dense texture.

Can you make this with regular whole wheat flour – or does it have to be whole wheat pastry flour? Thank you.
Hi Tina,
I’m so excited you want to try out this recipe.
You can use all purpose flour or 1:1 Gluten-free baking flour instead of whole wheat pastry flour.
I would not use regular whole wheat flour here since it is much tougher and won’t give the same results. The pastry flour is lighter in texture and better for baking.
Hope that helps!
This recipe looks great! I just made it but substituted chickpea flour for the wheat flour you have listed. Also, I didn’t use the foil and it came out very well, maybe that’s because of the chickpea powder.
Omigosh yess! I’m so happy you loved this Chocolate Protein Banana Bread, Lala!
The chickpea flour must have added such a good flavor. I must give it a go too!
This comment is wayyy due… My roommates and I were bored during the quarantine and were looking for baking a healthier version of banana bread, cuz the bananas we bought would’ve gone bad soon. Happy to say we found this recipe. So easy to make and sooooo delicious!!! We finished the bread in 2 days and to this day I look forward to getting bananas and waiting for them to ripen so I make it…
Yes yes yes!! This chocolate protein banana bread really is the only one you need in your regulars. Always a good indulgence. Enjoy!
Another great bread!!!!!! Definitely a repeater! My only thing is that it caved in a bit when cooling. Maybe i need less banana/liquid or cook lower for longer. Either way it was still delicious!
Definitely a repeater for me as well Alyssa! A little mess liquid would probably do the trick to avoid the sinking.
I’m so glad you loved it!
I unfortunately discovered I had no cocoa, so used avalanche drinking chocolate instead.
Then had no baking powder, so used 1 teaspoon bicarb soada and 2 Tablespoons lemon juice to activate it.
I was dubious but this tastes fantastic and doesnt have a protein aftertaste
So happy those swaps worked out for you! I’m going to keep that bi-carb soda trick in mind too.
Definitely no protein taste here; Glad you enjoyed!
Thanks so much Haylee for on the spot recipe for an amazing Choco banana bread. First time trying to bake using protein powder, it came out amazing. Now I can easily make some healthy snacks for my pre workouts. Keep going and post many more amazing recipes.
