And unbelievably rich and chocolatey from 4 different forms of chocolate: protein powder, cocoa powder, chocolate nut butter spread and chocolate chips.
Ingredients for Low Fat Low Calorie Protein Brownies
These fudgy chocolate protein brownies are made with a few healthy ingredients, and have no eggs, no oil, no sugar and gluten free too; The perfect chocolate protein powder recipe!
- Chocolate Protein Powder needed for high protein brownies and also replaces most of the ‘sugar’. See below for details here.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder, or Raw Cacao Powder (HAYLS.KITCHEN15OFF to save on Kiva Cacao)
- Gluten Free (All Purpose) Baking Flour – or a regular all purpose flour
- 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Substitute – I use Lakanto, to keep this recipe sugar free; (code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here too)
- Non-fat Greek Yogurt contributes to the oil-free part of these high protein brownies since it adds the moisture, and also extra protein
- Almond Milk or regular milk
- Baking Soda
- Sugar free Chocolate-Nut Butter Spread/Nutella! I used the monk-fruit sweetened Nutella substitute – Suntella – from Lakanto for this brownie recipe since it’s sugar free (same code here too).
- Sugar free Chopped Chocolate or Chocolate Chips – I use sugar free ones from Lakanto here (HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here as well). Lily’s is another sugar-free option!
What Protein Powder to use for baking High Protein Brownies
Baking with protein powder can be tricky, and the best protein powder I’ve found for this is a whey-caesin blend Quest Nutrition; I used their Chocolate Milkshake protein powder for this recipe.
I haven’t tried Whey protein, pea protein or other plant based ones, so I can’t say how those would work here.
Be sure to use a chocolate protein powder sweetened with stevia or monk fruit if you want a proper sugar free brownie recipe.
How to make Low Calorie Protein Powder Brownies?
This recipe for low fat and low calorie chocolate protein brownies is extremely easy to make; just mix and bake!
Here’s what it takes:
- Preheat your oven to 350°F and line a baking pan (about 8”) with parchment paper.
- Whisk all the dry ingredients in bowl: chocolate protein powder, cocoa powder, gluten free baking flour, zero calorie sweetener and baking soda.
- Whisk the wet ingredients in a large bowl: Greek Yogurt and almond milk.
- Add the dry mix to the wet and gently fold to combine. Just be gentle and don’t over-mix the batter. The protein powder will make it too dense.
You should have a thick batter. (Taste batter and add stevia powder if you want it sweeter)
- Add in chocolate nut butter spread + some chocolate chips and fold to combine.
- Transfer the no sugar protein brownie batter into pan, top with more chocolate chips and bake for about 25-30 minutes.
How to know when protein brownies are ready?
Protein brownies are ready when the top is completely set and dry, and a tester (toothpick or thin sharp knife) comes out mostly dry.
For extra fudgy brownies, let some moisture be there on the tester – this should be at about 25 minutes.
Wait until cool!
Don’t cut too soon or they will be too soft
How many calories are in a Protein Brownie?
An average protein brownie recipe has about 100 calories, since they typically have added fat from nut butters, but this one has just 56 calories a piece!
With no oil and no butter, these are actually the perfect low fat protein brownies!
Alternatives for Healthy High Protein Brownie Recipe
For the perfect low fat but moist protein brownies, I would highly suggest using the ingredients and brands I recommended; I do have some alternatives you can try. I haven’t testing them all, so I can’t say how your recipe might turn out.
- 1:1 Gluten Free Baking Flour: All purpose flour or Whole Wheat Pastry Flour
- Greek Yogurt: Coconut Yogurt
- Almond Milk: Any other milk
- 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Replacement: Regular confectioners sugar or coconut sugar (this won’t be sugar free though, and also higher in calories)
- Sugar-free Chocolate-Nut Butter Spread: Regular Nutella, or Chocolate Hazelnut Spread; Again not sugar free
Another option is to use Almond Butter or Hazelnut Butter, but the chocolate flavor won’t be as dark.
How to store Low Calorie Brownies?
This high protein no fat brownie recipe keeps well for a meal prep dessert or post workout snack and is freezer friendly too!
Store chocolate protein powder brownies at room temperature in an airtight container for 1-2 days or in the fridge for a week.
To freeze low calorie protein brownies, individually wrap in plastic wrap and place in freezer-safe zipper bags or air tight container; They should keep for 2-3 months

I’d love to know what you think if you try this recipe out!
These brownies are so so good! Low calorie and taste amazing!! My go to snack and so easy to make
One of my faves as well! The low calorie aspect of these protein brownies is exactly why I make them so often too. I hope you find more recipes you love here too 🙂
Great recipe! I used 42g of xylitol and it worked perfectly. It is not super sweet but it satisfies that sweet tooth.
So happy the swap worked out Lisa! The rich chocolate flavor in these protein brownies definitely comes though – instead of just sweetness. Enjoy!
I made this for breakfast meal prep yesterday and had them today. The first bite I took instantly melted in my mouth and every subsequent bite did the same! This is 100% the right way to start my morning! #browniegasm
Protein Brownies for breakfast? Now this is what we’re talking about!
That soft melt-in-your mouth browniegasm might just be the best description I’ve heard. I really am so happy you liked this one, because it’s one of my faves!
I have made these at least 5 times and every time I am equally amazed at how delicious they turn out and how low calorie they are! Not gonna lie I probably eat the entire batch in two days but thats just because I cant help myself!
Oh wow! You might have just made these more often than I have Holly! They really are worth repeating though if they run out in 2 days, haha. Can’t say no to more brownies!
