Rich and moist but Healthy Kefir Chocolate Cake for an easy dessert recipe. Kefir chocolate cake uses protein powder for sweetener, and has no sugar or butter either!
Jump to RecipeNot even kidding, I was not expecting this kefir chocolate cake to turn out so good. It might even be richer than that Protein Chocolate Mud Cake I made a while ago.
Using chocolate kefir from Lifeway Kefir in this protein cake recipe was a real game changer – the moist texture and deep chocolate flavor really got enhanced.
Plus, there was the benefit of the probiotics in this kefir cake too!
Ingredients for Healthy Chocolate Kefir Cake
This healthy chocolate kefir cake is made with a clean and healthy ingredients with no sugar, but protein powder for sweetness instead, and even whole wheat pastry flour.
- Low Fat Chocolate flavored Kefir for a rich chocolate flavored cake. I used the Low Fat Chocolate Kefir from Lifeway Kefir.
- Whey-Casein Chocolate Protein Powder to add sweetness to this no sugar kefir cake.
I used whey-casein Chocolate flavor from Quest Nutrition - Plant-Based (or Whey) Chocolate Protein Powder – I used Sprout Living Chocolate Maca Protein Powder.
Prozis or Dymatize ISO are also good options for the Whey. - Unflavored Protein Powder to replace some of the flour (and carbs) in the recipe for a slightly lower carb high protein cake. Quest Nutrition Multi-purpose here.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- Whole Wheat Pastry Flour – or a regular all purpose flour
- 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Substitute – I use Lakanto, to keep this recipe sugar free; (code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here too)
- Some Stevia Sweetener
- Almond Milk or regular milk
- Baking Soda
- Vanilla Extract
- Runny Almond Butter or Tahini (no butter or oil to keep this recipe low fat)
I recommend American Dream Nut Butter Caramel Crunch Cappuccino Almond Butter here; Its lower fat and higher protein. The link gives you a discount too.
And for the Protein Frosting
This recipe makes a chocolate kefir cake with a protein powder and kefir frosting too:
- Low Fat Chocolate flavored Kefir
- Non-fat Greek Yogurt
- Chocolate Protein Powder; This is the source of sweetness in the protein frosting for this cake. No added sugar and chocolate in this recipe. Quest again here.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
Tips for Baking Chocolate Kefir Cake with Protein Powder
Baking with kefir and protein powder is really easy, and here’s some tips to get it perfect:
For the Chococlate Kefir Cake:
- Use Creamy Almond Butter or Tahini also so that it mixes well into the batter
- Don’t over-mix the batter!
Make sure you gently fold the dry mix into the wet to combine them.
If you over-mix it, the protein powder will make the low calorie protein kefir cake tough, dense and gummy.
- Taste the batter and see if you need some extra sweetener. I’d recommend using stevia powder to maintain the consistency of the batter and have sugar free and healthy kefir chocolate cake.
- Don’t over-bake the cake or it will get tough; Remove when the tester/knife comes out just dry, but moist.
- Let cake cool completely before frosting or the frosting will melt.
For the Frosting in this Kefir Protein Cake
- Use whey-casein protein powder since it mixes well with the yogurt.
- Only add milk if necessary; Mix the frosting well first, and then add milk if still too dry.
How to store Chocolate Protein Kefir Cake Recipe
Store easy chocolate kefir protein cake in an airtight container in the fridge for upto 4 days.
To freeze chocolate protein powder kefir cake, slice and wrap each piece in plastic wrap, and then place in freezer-safe zipper bags.
Thaw in fridge before eating.
Alternatives for Healthy Kefir Cake Recipe
For the perfect healthy kefir cake recipe, I used protein powder and monk fruit sweetener to replace the sugar and I would highly suggest using the ingredients recommended.
I do have some alternatives you can try. I haven’t testing them all, so I can’t say how the recipe might turn out.
