Really the best Chocolate Cherry Protein Brownies with all the fudgy texture and rich flavor, but no sugar or butter! Healthy cherry brownies use protein powder and Greek yogurt for a recipe you’re going to love.
Jump to RecipeTo be honest, I was very surprised how good these were. I avoided the chocolate and cherry combination like the plague, so when my fiancé asked for this recipe, I said no.
Another request from a follower on Instagram, plus I had cherries in the fridge, so I had to go for these.
Man what a wonder this cherry brownie recipe is! Something you will definitely want to go for again!
Ingredients for Healthy Chocolate Cherry Protein Brownies
These fudgy chocolate cherry protein brownies are made with a few healthy ingredients, and have no eggs, oil or sugar, and easily gluten free too; The perfect chocolate cherry protein powder brownie recipe!
- Chocolate Protein Powder needed for high protein brownie and also replaces most of the ‘sugar’. I used part whey-casein Chocolate flavor from Quest Nutrition, and part plant–based Chocolate from Dymatize for this recipe.
- Unflavored Protein Powder to replace some of the flour (and carbs) in the recipe for a slightly lower carb high protein brownie. Quest Nutrition Multi-purpose here.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder, or Raw Cacao Powder
- Whole Wheat Pastry Flour – or a regular all purpose flour
- 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Substitute – I use Lakanto, to keep this recipe sugar free; (code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here too)
- Some Stevia Sweetener
- Non-fat Greek Yogurt contributes to the oil-free part of these high protein brownies since it adds the moisture, and also extra protein
- Almond Milk or regular milk
- Baking Soda
- Vanilla Extract
- Runny Almond Butter or Tahini (no butter or oil to keep this recipe low fat)
I recommend American Dream Nut Butter Almond Butter here; Its lower fat and higher protein. The link gives you a discount too.
- Cherries!
- Sugar free Chocolate Chips or Chopped Chocolate – I use sugar free ones from Lakanto here (HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here as well). Lily’s is another sugar-free option!
What Protein Powder to use for Cherry Brownies?
The best protein powders I’ve found for this is a mix of whey and whey-caesin blend, or plant-based + whey-casein.
I haven’t tried Whey-only protein, pea protein or other plant based ones, so I can’t say how those would work here.
Be sure to use a chocolate protein powder sweetened with stevia or monk fruit for a proper sugar free brownie recipe.
Tips for Perfect Chocolate Cherry Protein Powder Brownie Recipe
These chocolate protein powder cherry brownies are super easy to make, but here’s some tips to get it perfect every time!
- Use room temperature milk and yogurt;
This is so the wet ingredients and dry ingredients can mix well.
- Use Creamy Almond Butter also so that it mixes well into the batter
- Don’t over-mix the batter!
Make sure you gently fold the dry mix into the wet to combine them.
If you over-mix it, the protein powder will make the fudgy brownies tough, dense and gummy.
- Taste the batter and see if you need some extra sweetener. I’d recommend using stevia powder to maintain the consistency of the batter and have sugar free and healthy fudgy brownies.
- Don’t over-bake the brownies or they might get tough; Remove when the tester/knife comes out mostly dry.
Underbaking a little is okay.
- For extra fudgy brownies, let some moisture be there on the tester – this should be at about 25 minutes.
- Don’t cut into the brownies too soon or they will be too soft and fall apart.
How to store Cherry Brownies?
This high protein chocolate cherry brownie recipe keeps well for a meal prep dessert or post workout snack and is freezer friendly too!
Store fudgy cherry protein brownies at room temperature in an airtight container for 1-2 days or in the fridge for a week.
To freeze fudgy cherry brownies, individually wrap in plastic wrap and place in freezer-safe zipper bags or air tight container; They should keep for 2-3 months.
