Guilt free Chocolate Protein Cake Pops with a protein chocolate cake, frosting and sugar free chocolate! These homemade chocolate protein powder cake pops are healthy, low calorie, low fat, gluten free and Vegan too!
Jump to RecipeStore bought cake pops were one of my favorite desserts growing up – cute and pretty and kinda fancy too. But all that sugar is quite repulsive at this point.
This homemade chocolate cake pop recipe is definitely a lot better! With protein powder and monkfruit sweetener in place of sugar, and a sugar free chocolate, this dessert is acceptable 5 at once!
Ingredients for Chocolate Protein Cake Pops
These chocolate protein cake pops are made with gluten free flour, use cocoa powder and are sweetened with chocolate protein powder; Quite a convenient homemade cake pops recipe.
- Gluten Free (All Purpose) Baking Flour – or a regular all purpose flour
- Chocolate Protein Powder needed for high protein cake bites and also replaces most of the ‘sugar’. I used part whey-caesin Chocolate Milkshake protein powder from Quest Nutrition, and part Chocolate Protein World Whey for this recipe.
Code HAYLSKITCHEN gives a discount on ProteinWorld; - Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Substitute – I use Lakanto, to keep this recipe sugar free; (code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here)
- Unsweetened Applesauce for a low fat and low calorie mini cake recipe
- Melted Butter
- Lemon Juice
- Hot Water
- Baking Soda
For a High Protein Chocolate Frosting for Cake Pops:
- Non Fat Greek Yogurt for an extra high protein frosting recipe, but any other yogurt will also work
- Chocolate Protein Powder – this is what replaces the sugar here. I recommend ProteinWorld for this recipe to keep it sugar free.; Use the code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount.
Quest chocolate protein powder is another option. - Unsweetened Cocoa Powder or Cacao Powder
- Some Water
The Chocolate Coating
- Sugar free Chocolate Bar or Chocolate Chips: I use the chips from Lakanto here (HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here). Another option is Lily’s Bar or Chocolate Chips.
- Coconut Oil so the chocolate is easier to melt and more smooth when you dip.
- Sprinkles
Tips for Chocolate Protein Powder Cake Pops Recipe
This homemade chocolate protein powder cake pops recipe really is an easy one, but here’s some tips to get it just right!
- Use room temperature applesauce;
This is so the wet ingredients and dry ingredients can mix well to give the perfect homemade chocolate cake pops.
- Use melted Butter so that it mixes well into the healthy cake pops batter.
- Don’t over-mix the batter!
Make sure you gently fold the dry mix into the wet to combine them.
If you over-mix it, the protein powder will make the low calorie cakes pops, dense and gummy.
- Taste the batter and see if you need some extra sweetener. I’d recommend using stevia powder to maintain the consistency of the batter and have sugar free and healthy mini chocolate cake bites.
- Don’t let the batter sit out too long; Pour immediately into baking pan and bake.
This is to avoid any reactions between the ingredients.
- Let cake cool completely before crumbling or the balls won’t form well.
- Mix cake crumbles and frosting well before rolling so each ball is uniform and easy to roll.
- Use wet palms to roll the cake pop mix into balls so it doesn’t stick to your palms; It can be very dry.
How to store High Protein Cake Pops?
This high protein chocolate pops bites keep well for a meal prep dessert or post workout snack; Freezer friendly too!
Store healthy chocolate protein powder cake pops at room temperature in an airtight container for 1-2 days or in the fridge for a week.
To freeze the healthy chocolate cake bites, individually wrap in plastic wrap and place in freezer-safe zipper bags or air tight container; They should keep for 2-3 months.
Alternatives for Healthy Cake Pops Recipe
For the perfect low fat, low calorie and high protein healthy chocolate cake pops recipe, I would highly suggest using the ingredients and brands I recommended; I do have some alternatives you can try. I haven’t testing them all, so I can’t say how your cake bites recipe might turn out.
- 1:1 Gluten Free Baking Flour: All purpose flour or Whole Wheat Pastry Flour in the same amount by weight not cups
- 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Replacement: Regular confectioners sugar or coconut sugar (this won’t be sugar free though, and also higher in calories)
- Unsweetened Applesauce: Pumpkin Puree
- Melted Butter: Melted Coconut Oil
- Lemon Juice: Apple Cider Vinegar or White Vinegar
Options for the Chocolate Protein Frosting and Coating
- Chocolate Protein Powder: Use vanilla flavor
- Greek Yogurt: Coconut Yogurt
- Sugar Free Chocolate Chips: Regular chocolate chips or chopped chocolate bar
To make Vegan Chocolate Cake Pops
These chocolate protein cake bites have no eggs or milk and can be made Vegan with a plant-based protein powder and dairy free butter or coconut oil.
ProteinWorld has a Vegan protein blend that could work well in these cake pops (HAYLSKITCHEN for the discount here too).
I haven’t tried pea protein or other plant based ones, so I can’t say how those would work.
