Jump to RecipeGot this idea for a chocolate flavored strawberry shortcake recipe from someone on Instagram, so all concept credit goes there.
A real easy combination here though – a chocolate protein scone instead of the classic shortcake, and a mix of protein powder and yogurt to replace the whipped cream. This beauty is healthy and easy to assemble too.
Ingredients for Easy Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake Recipe!
This easy chocolate strawberry shortcake recipe needs just a few simple and healthy ingredients and have no butter or sugar – a low fat and low sugar recipe!
- Whole wheat pastry flour for that lightness of the all-purpose flour, but with the nutritious benefits of whole grains
- Chocolate Protein Powder to replace the sugar. I use the whey-casein blend from Quest Nutrition.
- Unflavored Protein Powder to replace some of the flour (and carbs) in the recipe for a slightly low carb high protein shortcake recipe. Quest Nutrition again here since it’s a whey casein blend and bakes well.
- Coconut Flour
- A bit of 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Substitute – I use Lakanto, to keep this recipe sugar free; (code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here).
- Non-fat Greek Yogurt another protein-packed ingredient
- Baking Powder
For the Sugar-free Chocoalte Strawberry Shortcake topping:
- Vanilla Protein Powder; Quest Nutrition whey-casein here again.
- Non-fat Plain Greek Yogurt
- Fresh Strawberries
Tips for making Protein Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake without Sugar
This recipe for protein chocolate strawberry shortcake uses Greek yogurt for that moist texture, and has no butter or heavy cream. Here’s some pointers to make sure you get it right:
- Mix all dry ingredients first, then add yogurt in.
- Use cold yogurt so that the dough is cold and rises well.
- Add all yogurt at once and mix.
- Don’t over-mix the dough or over-knead or it will get too warm and make dense scones.
- Don’t let dough sit out for too long; Work quickly; You don’t want the dough to get warm and hard to handle.
- Don’t roll dough too thin or thick; Just about 1”.
- Use a sharp knife or pizza cutter to cut scones. Don’t shape with hands. You will work the dough too much and they won’t be light and crumbly anymore.
- Let the base for these chocolate shortcakes cool completely before assemblig, or the yogurt mixture will melt away.
To Store Protein Powder Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake
This easy recipe for protein powder chocolate strawberry shortcake can be stored on the counter, fridge or in the freezer (make sure the cool down first).
To store, place in airtight container on countertop 1 hour, or in the fridge for 1-2 days.
For a freezer friendly option, wrap healthy chocolate shortake base (not assembled) in plastic wrap, place in zipper bag and freeze up to 2 months.
To serve: reheat, thaw frozen chocolate strawberry shortcake biscuit to room temperature and then assemble fresh homemade chocolate chocolate shortcake.
Alternatives for Healthy Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake Recipe
I really recommend the ingredients – and brands – I used make this healthy strawberry shortcake.
Here’s some other options you can try, but I haven’t given them all a try yet, so I’m not sure how they would all work together.
- Whole Wheat Pastry Flour: All purpose flour or 1:1 gluten free baking flour in the same amount by weight not cups.
- Unflavored Protein Powder: More Plain flour, but reduce the amount of yogurt to 1 cup
- 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Replacement: Regular confectioners sugar (this won’t be sugar free though, and also higher in calories)
- Unsweetened Greek Yogurt: Vanilla greek yogurt, but try to keep it light.
Coconut yogurt could be an option.
Make Vegan Chocolate Strawberry Shortcake!
The original recipe here has no eggs, butter or milk, so you could easily make protein packed Vegan chocolate strawberry shortcake too.
I haven’t tried this out though, so I can’t tell if it will work. Maybe try half the batch. Replace the Greek Yogurt with Coconut Yogurt, and maybe try a pea protein powder for a vegan chocolate strawberry shortcake recipe.
Let me know how it goes if you do!
