Think about this – a rich chocolate protein cake, protein ‘condensed milk’, sugar-free ‘caramel’, cool whip topping and then chocolate and Heath toffee bits on the top. What more can you really want from a dessert?!
This cake was magical to put it lighty.
Ingredients for Healthy Better than Sex Cake
This healthy better than sex cake recipe made with clean ingredients. Whole wheat pastry flour, protein powder and monkfruit sweetener instead of regular flour and sugar, and also a high-protein and sugar-free version of condensed milk and caramel.
For the High-Protein Chocolate Cake:
- Whole Wheat Pastry Flour
- Whey-Casein Chocolate Protein Powder needed for a high protein cake and also replaces the ‘sugar’.
I used Whey-Casein Chocolate protein powder from Quest Nutrition. - Whey Chocolate Protein Powder: Dymatize ISO 100 Chocolate Whey.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Substitute – I use Lakanto, to keep this recipe sugar-free; (code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here)
- Instant Coffee
- Hot Water
- Unsweetened Applesauce
- Some Lemon Juice
- A bit of Melted Butter
- Baking Soda
Protein Condensed Milk
- Whey-casein Vanilla Protein Powder – I used the one from Quest Nutrition
- Unsweetened Almond Milk
Sugar-free Caramel
- Powder Almond Butter: The one from PB2 here.
Peanut Butter Powder from Lakanto (the code HAYLSKITCHEN gives you a discount) or PbFit works too. - Caramel flavor Peanut Butter! I used American Dream Nut Butter Peanut Butter; It’s lower fat and higher protein than other nut butters.

How to make the Better than Sex Heath Cake with Protein Powder
This protein powder better than sex Heath cake is super easy to make, and doesn’t need any fancy baking skills. Here’s what you have to do:
- Mix all dry ingredients in a bowl.
Sieve the cocoa powder and flour so you don’t have any lumps!
- Whisk the wet ingredients – hot water, applesauce, melted butter and lemon juice.
Use hot water; This is essential. Hot, not boiling, not warm.
Use melted butter so that it mixes well into the healthy chocolate poke cake batter.
- Add dry ingredients to wet, and mix.
Batter will be runny.
Don’t over-mix the batter! Gently fold; over-mixing will make your poke cake dense because of the protein powder and wheat flour.
- Taste the batter and see if you need some extra sweetener.
Use stevia powder to maintain the consistency of the batter and have healthy, sugar free chocolate poke cake.
- Pour batter immediately into baking pan and bake
Don’t let the batter sit out too long (avoids reactions between the ingredients)
- Stop baking when tester/knife comes out just dry, but moist.
Don’t over-bake the cake or it will get tough.
Make Filling:
- WHEN CAKE IS STILL HOT, whisk condensed milk and caramel ingredients to make filling.
Don’t wait cake to cool!
- Poke holes in cake (use rounded end of wooden spoon/spatula) not too close or too far – 1” ish apart.
- Pour filing into holes immediately – condensed milk then caramel.
Frosting:
- LET CAKE COOL BEFORE FROSTING or the cool whip will melt.
- Spread cool whip on top, then top with toffee bits and chopped chocolate.
How to store High Protein Better Than Sex Cake

- Cool Whip: Dairy free whipped topping
- Toffee Bits: Chopped candy like Butterfinger
- Sugar Free Chocolate: Regular chocolate

- ⅔ cup Chocolate Protein Powder (Whey), 60g
- ½ cup Chocolate Protein Powder (Whey-casein), 45g
- 6 Tbsp Unsweetened Cocoa Powder, 30g
- 4½ Tbsp Zero Calorie 1:1 Sugar Replacement, 54g
- 1½ tsp Baking Soda
- 1 cup + 2 Tbsp Hot Water, 270ml
- ¾ cup Unsweetened Applesauce, 180g
- 2 tsp Melted Butter, 10g
- 1 Tbsp Lemon Juice, 15ml
Protein Condensed Milk Filling:
- ½ cup Unsweetened Almond Milk, 120ml
- ⅓ cup Vanilla Protein Powder, Whey-casein, 30g
Sugar-free Caramel Sauce:
- ¼ cup Powdered Almond Butter, 26g (or PB)
- 1 Tbsp Peanut Butter, 14g, Caramel flavor recommended below
- 2 Tbsp Caramel Coffee Syrup, 30ml, Sugar-free recommended below
- 2 Tbsp Water
Topping:
- 4 oz Reduced Fat Cool Whip, 112g
- 1 Tbsp Chopped Chocolate, 14g
- 1½ Tbsp Toffee Bits, 22g
- Optional: Sugar-free Caramel Syrup
Instructions
- Preheat oven to 350°F and line an 8×8” baking pan with parchment paper.
- In a bowl, whisk flour, whey and whey-casein chocolate protein powders, unsweetened cocoa powder, zero calorie sugar replacement and baking soda.
- In a large bowl, whisk together hot water, applesauce, butter and lemon juice.
- Add dry mix to wet, and gently fold until just combined.DO NOT OVER-MIX or protein powder will make the cake dense.
- Pour batter into pan, and bake for 20-25 minutes.Don’t let the batter sit out.A tester inserted into the center should come out clean but moist, and center of cake springy to touch.
Filling:
- When cake is still hot, poke holes in cake(using rounded end of wooden spoon) using about 1” apart.
- Condensed Milk: In a bowl, whisk milk and protein powder.
- Caramel: In another bowl stir almond butter powder, peanut butter, caramel syrup and water.
- Add milk/water little at a time.
- Pour protein ‘condensed milk’ into holes; Fill completely.Then pour sugar-free ‘caramel’; Fill and spread excess around.
- Let cake cool completely.Then place in fridge about 4 hours.
Toppings:
- Spread cool whip on top of cake, top with toffee bits and chopped chocolate.
- Slice into 9 pieces, drizzle with caramel syrup and enjoy.

Okay, so I don’t know what kind of voodoo magic you did on this to make it macro friendly because it tastes all of 500 calories! I made of for a family dinner and they had NO clue it was healthy! Everyone loved it!
