Jump to RecipeI don’t even remember what made me go for these biscuits, but it was definitely a good use for the last bit of sweet potato I had left this season.
These biscuits were just perfect – right amount of sweet and savory, and went perfectly with a dab of butter. Probably a good one to try with some crispy chicken too! Maybe these cornflake crusted cajun popcorn chicken?

- Whole Wheat Pastry Flour – or a regular all purpose flour
- Coconut Flour
- Non-Fat Greek Yogurt for extra protein
- Cold Butter
- Baking Powder
Tips for Sweet Potato Biscuits with Protein Powder and No Sugar
This is an easy sweet potato biscuits recipe with a few simple steps, but here’s some pointers for the perfect protein powder biscuit recipe:
- Use Garnet or Jewel sweet potatoes. They are orange-reddish on the outside, and mildly sweet.
- Make sure you let the sweet potato cool before continuing with the recipe or it will make the dough hard to handle.
- Use cold yogurt so that the dough does not get too sticky and hard to shape.
- Use cold butter – and grated – so that it gives you a good texture for the dough (that lightness) and that slight buttery feel too.
- Don’t over-mix the dough or it will get too warm and soft. Also, the protein powder can make the healthy sweet potato biscuits tough.
- Don’t let dough sit out for too long; Work quickly; You don’t want the dough to get warm and hard to roll.
How to store Protein Sweet Potato Biscuits
These homemade protein sweet potato biscuits keep really well at room temperature, in the fridge or freezer.
Store easy sweet potato biscuits in an airtight container on the countertop for 2 days or up to 5 days in the fridge.
You can freeze the this sweet potato biscuit recipe up to 2 months by placing them in a freezer safe zipper bag.
When it’s time to eat, thaw to room temperature and warm them in the microwave for extra coziness.
Alternatives for Sweet Potato Biscuits Recipe without Buttermilk
I make these healthy sweet potato biscuits without buttermilk but with Greek yogurt and protein powder instead. Here are some alternatives you can try for this recipe, but I haven’t given them all a go yet, so let me know if you do!
- Whole Wheat Pastry Flour: All purpose flour or 1:1 Gluten Free Baking Flour in the same amount by weight not cups
- Unflavored Protein Powder: More Plain flour, but reduce the amount of yogurt to ⅓ cup
- Greek Yogurt: Coconut yogurt
For a Vegan Option
For Vegan sweet potato biscuits, you can use coconut yogurt instead of Greek yogurt, and use a plant-based protein powder.
The original recipe has no eggs and no milk, so these high protein sweet potato biscuits can easily be turned Vegan.
I haven’t tried this option yet, so let me know how it goes if you do!
