Ridiculously rich Hot Chocolate Protein Balls with a marshmallow and hint of cinnamon. These healthy hot cocoa protein bites use protein powder, oat flour and coconut flour for a no bake and gluten free snack.
Jump to RecipeNot even kidding with how rich and chocolatey these hot chocolate energy balls are. Like for real extra rich in that hot cocoa flavor.
And serving size? I actually had 4 of these at once. A great high protein snack for sure.
Ingredients for Hot Chocolate Protein Balls
These healthy hot chocolate protein balls are made with simple ingredients like oat flour, protein powder and coconut flour, and are great for a healthy snack. Here’s all that goes in:
- Chocolate Protein Powder for a high protein snack, and also replace the sweetener.
I recommend Protein World Slender Blend or ProteinWorld Whey for this recipe to keep it sugar free; Use the code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount.
Another option would be Quest. - Oat Flour (you can make your own with rolled oats in a high speed blender)
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- Coconut Flour
- More Unsweetened Almond Milk
- A bit of Cinnamon
- Mini Marshmallows for that hot cocoa effect
For the chocolate extra:
- Chocolate Chips: I’d recommend the sugar free ones from Lakanto (Use my code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount)
Maybe some White Chocolate Chips or Chopped Chocolate. I would recommend Lily’s to keep it sugar free.
- A bit of Coconut Oil
Tips for Hot Cocoa Protein Ball
This these hot cocoa protein balls are a no bake recipe, and really is quite easy. Here’s some pointers to get it right.
- Add more milk/coconut flour to mix if too dry/wet; Mixture should be handleable and rollable.
- Taste the batter and see if you need some extra sweetener. I’d recommend using stevia powder to maintain the consistency of the dough and have sugar free no bake cake pops.
- Use slightly damp hands to roll balls to prevent sticking to palms.
- Melt chocolate in increments in the microwave; Be careful about this or it may burn. If you want to be safe, use the double boiler approach.
Let the melted chocolate cool a bit before coating the protein bites.
To store No Bake Hot Chocolate Energy Balls
These hot chocolate energy bites are best stored in the fridge since they do have a bit of milk in there.
To store hot cocoa protein energy balls in the fridge, keep in an airtight container for up to 1 week.
To freeze hot chocolate protein bites, place cooled balls in an airtight sealed container or freezer safe zipper bag for 2-3 months. Let them thaw on the counter before eating!
Alternate ingredients for Healthy Hot Cocoa Snack Balls with Protein Powder
I made sugar free, gluten free and healthy hot chocolate energy balls with the cocoa powder and ingredients above, but here’s some other clean ingredients you can try.
- Oat flour: Almond flour
- Coconut Flour: Try 3x the amount of almond flour (I haven’t given this a try yet, but it should work)
- Chocolate Protein Powder: Use Vanilla
- Almond Milk: Regular milk or other non dairy milk
To make Vegan Hot Cocoa Energy Bites
Use a plant based protein powder and dairy free chocolate chips to make Vegan hot cocoa protein bites.
ProteinWorld has a Vegan protein blend as well (HAYLSKITCHEN for the discount here too) which would be great for these chocolate covered energy bites.
You also want to use Vegan marshmallows for this recipe; There’s some brands that sell these on Amazon.

Hi! Oh my, these look divine! I know that you’re probably sick of readers asking about substitutions, but I have to inquire anyway: I am on a budget, can’t have stevia and don’t eat dairy. Currently, I have pea protein and soy protein isolate vanilla flavor from Whole Foods. Would either of those work and would the weight be the same? Thanks so much, I’ve made one of your brownie recipes with soy protein before and they turned out alright but very dry. These recipes look like miracles and I would LOVE to whip up all of ’em;)
Hi Shelby!
No worries on the questions at all 🙂
I’m so happy you want to try these out!
I use the protein powder here as a replacement for the sweetener. So I’d say use the protein powder that is more sweet. If the mixture isnt sweet enough, add some other sweetener – powdered sugar/monkfruit etc.
Also, make sure that the protein powder dissolves easily in water (this is so it mixes well).
I’d actually love to know if you try them out!
