An attractive Marbled Protein Banana Bread made healthy with no oil, butter or sugar! This healthy chocolate swirl protein banana bread uses whole wheat pastry flour, Greek yogurt, protein powder and cocoa powder for all the flavor with no health compromises.
Jump to RecipeI think I’m really going to stick to all the healthy high protein banana bread recipes here with this no oil and no butter concept going. It just lowers the calories so much, and you still have the good crumb you want from a classic banana bread without any of the jargon.
I’d been meaning to go for a healthy chocolate swirl banana bread recipe for a while, so when I saw some frozen (extra ripe) bananas in my freezer when I was cleaning it out, I put aside those brownie plans for this.
Ingredients for Marbled Protein Banana Bread
This high protein marbled banana bread is made with healthy ingredients like whole wheat pastry flour, protein powder and non-fat greek yogurt, and has no oil and no sugar!
For the common ingredients:
- Mashed Banana from completely ripe and browned bananas
- Unsweetened Almond Milk
- Non-fat Greek Yogurt a high protein low fat banana bread recipe
- Some Sugar free Maple Syrup for low calorie recipe with no sugar! I use the sugar free monk fruit maple syrup from Lakanto (code HAYLSKITCHEN gets you a discount)
- Eggs
- Whole wheat pastry flour which gives it the light texture, bit still keeps this recipe healthy because of the whole grain from the whole wheat
- Unflavored Protein Powder to replace some of the flour (and carbs) in the recipe for a slightly lower carb high protein banana bread. I used a whey-caesin blend from Quest Nutrition.
- Baking Powder
The vanilla flavored banana bread half:
- Vanilla Protein Powder; This is the source of protein and sweetness in the protein powder banana bread since there’s no added sugar in this recipe. Quest again here.
- Coconut Flour
The chocolate swirl banana bread half:
- Chocolate Protein Powder: Also the source of sweetness here. This one’s also Quest.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- More Coconut Flour
- A bit of Vanilla Extract
What Protein Powder to use for baking High Protein Marble Banana Bread
Baking with protein powder can be tricky, and the best protein powder I’ve found for this is a whey-caesin blend Quest Nutrition. For this extra healthy protein banana bread recipe I used all, the unflavored multi-purpose mix, vanilla and chocolate protein powder from Quest.
I haven’t tried Whey protein, pea protein or other plant based ones, so I can’t say how those would work here.
Be sure to use a protein powder sweetened with stevia or monk fruit if you want a proper sugar free banana bread.
Can you store Marbled Chocolate Protein Banana Bread
This moist and super healthy banana bread keeps really well and is great for a meal prep snack, breakfast or postworkout treat, because it’s freezer friendly too.
Store protein powder banana bread at room temperature for about 3 days in an airtight container.
To store in the fridge, place marbled protein banana bread without butter in an airtight container and keep up to 1 week.
To freeze the healthy chocolate swirl banana bread (2-3 months), cut it into slices, wrap each slice in plastic wrap, and place them in a freezer-safe zipper bag.
You can also store the whole loaf itself – be sure to let it thaw before you slice.
Tips for the perfect Chocolate Swirl Protein Banana Bread
- Use perfectly ripe bananas; These are easier to mash, and also add a lot of sweetness (so you don’t have to add as much protein powder and maple syrup to sweeten) and you get a healthy protein banana bread without sugar
- Blend the wet mix using a hand mixer to prevent any chunks of banana in the batter.
- Don’t over-mix the wet and dry mixture or the loaf will be too dense and gummy (because of the gluten from the whole wheat flour, and also the fact that protein powder can make a batter tough).
- Make sure you have similar consistency in both batters – chocolate and vanilla banana bread. Add more coconut flour if one is too wet, and milk if too dry.
- Cover chocolate marbled protein banana loaf with foil tent after 40 mins of baking to prevent the top from browning and burning.
