This Nutella Hot Chocolate recipe uses cacao powder, homemade sugar free Nutella and is sweetened with stevia – definitely the ultimate no-guilt hot cocoa! An easy hot chocolate hazelnut drink to use up leftover Nutella and can be made in the microwave. Vegan and dairy free too!
Jump to RecipeI got really hooked on the whole hot chocolate thing after making that Protein Mexican Hot Chocolate, and I’ve now got a list of about 7 more recipes I want to try.
If my love for chocolate hasn’t come through already, hopefully this makes it evident?
Anyway, I think we can all agree that chocolate and hazelnuts just makes such a beautiful combination, so a hot cocoa recipe with this flavor just has to be amazing too right?
Ingredients for this Nutella Hot Chocolate Hack:
This healthy hazelnut hot chocolate is made with clean ingredients like cacao or cocoa powder, almond milk and a homemade Nutella recipe, making it the perfect Vegan and dairy free indulgent drink.
- Unsweetened Almond Milk for a dairy free and Vegan recipe, but you can use any other non dairy milk or regular milk too
- Water – you could use more milk here, but even the water makes it creamy because of the nutella
- Raw cacao powder or unsweetened cocoa
- Nutella or any chocolate hazelnut spread
- Stevia powder as a sweetener to keep this hot chocolate completely sugar free, but you can use regular sugar here as well
- Pure Vanilla Extract
- Optional, but I like to add Dark Chocolate Chips or chopped chocolate for a richer flavor.
What makes this Nutella Hot Cocoa Healthy?
Unlike normal Nutella or chocolate hazelnut hot cocoa recipes, this one has no sugar since it’s sweetened with stevia powder, and uses my homemade Sugar free Nutella.
Another bonus here is that you get the rich chocolate flavor from the Cacao powder instead of a ton of melted chocolate.
I do like to add some chocolate chips for an even richer flavor though. To still keep it sugar free, I use the ones from Lily’s.
How do you make Hot Chocolate with Nutella leftovers?
This leftover Nutella hot chocolate is really easy, and perfect for when you just have a bit of the spread left over in the jar.
All you need to do here is whisk and heat up the milk, water, cacao powder, vanilla and sweetener in a small pot over medium heat.
Let it start to simmer. Make sure you don’t let it boil over.
Then add in the Nutella and chocolate, whisk again, and pour it into your mug.
And that’s it!
How to make Hot Chocolate with Nutella in the Microwave
You can make homemade Nutella hot chocolate in the microwave by first blending all the ingredients in a blender and then heating it up.
Here’s some recommendations for that:
- Double or triple of the recipe in this case. This way you won’t lose on quantity by having it stick to the blender itself.
- Use slightly warmed milk to make sure the Nutella combines with it.
How do you melt Nutella with milk?
To make sure the Nutella melts with the milk when using the blender and microwave method, you want to use slightly warm milk, and then add in the Nutella.
If your Nutella is too hard, heat up the milk a little extra.

Other than making this amazing hazelnut chocolate drink, you can also use Nutella to make just plain chocolate milk, as a spread for toast, or drizzle it on some crepes.
