Protein Apple Fritters for a healthy, but tasty alternative your bakery favorite. Complete with fresh apples and sugar-free glaze, protein powder apple fritters are low fat too!
Jump to RecipeOkay so I really love a good warm apple fritter – even got one larger than my face on a trip back to my college town once – but not a fan of the sugar and deep-fried part.
My solution? Make a high-protein apple fritter that’s sugar free, and baked not fried!
And also make it super easy and tasty too!
Ingredients For Protein Apple Fritters
These healthy, high protrein apple fritters are made with a few clean ingredients, and have no sugar either.
Here’s what you need for these chocolate protein rolls:
- Whole Wheat Pastry Flour
- Vanilla Protein Powder needed for high protein apple fritters, and also replaces the ‘sugar’. I used Vanilla protein powder from Quest Nutrition.
- Unflavored Protein Powder to replace some of the flour for a lower-carb recipe. Quest Nutrition Multipurpose here.
- Non-Fat Greek Yogurt for extra protein
- Almond Milk
- Baking Powder
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
For the Sugar-Free Glaze:
- 1:1 Sugar Free Powdered Sugar Replacement: I used Lakanto powdered monk fruit and erythritol sweetener (code HAYLSKITCHEN gets you a discount here too)
- Unsweetened Almond Milk
Tips for Sugar Free Apple Fritters with Protein Powder
This really is an easy one, but here’s some pointers for the perfect sugar free apple fritters recipe with protein powder:
- Use whey-caesin not whey protein powder since it works best with the ratio of ingredients, and also mixes and bakes well.
- Use cold yogurt so that the dough does not get too sticky and soggy.
- Use the butter, don’t skip it!
You want a light soft apple cider, and this is needed.
- Don’t over-mix the dough or it will get too warm and soft. Also, the protein powder can make the healthy apple fritters tough.
- Don’t let dough sit out for too long; Work quickly; You don’t want the healthy apple fritter dough to get warm and soggy.
- Lightly wet palms so the dough into balls so it doesn’t stick on.
How to store Homemade Baked Apple Fritters
These homemade baked apple fritters keep really well at room temperature, in the fridge or freezer.
Sugar-free apple fritters keep on the countertop in an airtight container for 2 days.
Store the protein apple fritters up to 5 days in the fridge in an airtight container.
For a freezer friendly option, freeze the healthy apple fritters on a baking sheet and then transfer to freezer safe zipper bag. It should keep up to 2 months.
When it’s time to eat, thaw the frozen apple fritters room temperature and warm them in the microwave for extra goodness.
Alternatives for Healthy Apple Fritters Recipe
I make these healthy and high protein apple fritters with the ingredients and brands above, but here’s some alternatives you can try. I haven’t given them all a go yet, so let me know if you do!
- Whole Wheat Pastry Flour: All purpose flour or 1:1 Gluten Free Baking Flour, with the same amount by weight, not cups.
- Unflavored Protein Powder: Use more flour, but also reduce milk – maybe 6 Tbsp instead.
- Greek Yogurt: Coconut yogurt
- Almond Milk: Any other milk
- Sugar-free Powdered Sugar: Regular powdered sugar
For a Vegan Option
The original recipe here has no eggs and no milk, so these homemade healthy apple fritters can be easily turned Vegan.
Replace the Greek Yogurt with Coconut Yogurt, dairy free butter, and a plant based protein powder to make Vegan apple fritters.
I haven’t tried this option yet, so let me know how it goes if you do!

You’ve officially made all of my favorite desserts healthy! I’ve whipped up your scotchies, giant monster cookie, monkey bread, Samoa donuts, chickpea brookies, pop tarts, and now apple fritters! I LOVE those pastries so much but can’t take all of the sugar! These are in the oven right now and smell like a professional ritzy bakery. I’m licking the batter as I write this. I doubt they will last more than two days. Now I must keep myself from eating all the glaze before my little fritters are ready;) Your site is my go-to for healthy desserts that don’t disappoint and are vegan-adaptable. Happy holidays!!!
Omigosh Shelby!! You made my day!
I’m so happy you tried so many of my recipes and loved them all! (subtle plug to leave a comment on those recipes? It would really help support my blog!)
About these apple fritters? They really did smell amazing and I had a very hard time resisting them while I did the shoot.
Hope you love them as much as I did!
I’m so excited to see what you try next
