Protein Powder Dalgona Whipped Coffee: A healthy take on the viral TikTok coffee using protein powder in place of sugar. Just as fluffy, frothy and creamy, but SO much better for you!
Jump to RecipeI AM HOOKED!!
This concoction is so good, I even just ate that whipped part straight out of the bowl!
I’m legit having MAJOR regrets here for not trying this out the moment it got popular.
I’ve never been a coffee drinker so that’s probably why.
Another reason I’m beating myself up right now is because I actually had the ingredients all this while. I’ve been using instant coffee (Decaf) in my protein shakes for months now, so I’m actually quite mad at myself right now.

Not the best ingredients here: sugar, instant coffee and boiling water.
I know people replace the sugar with coconut sugar to make it a bit healthier and natural, but there’s still “sugar” in the nutrition label.
Ingredients for a No-Sugar Version
I just replaced the sugar in the classic with protein powder – this also makes it Keto and Low carb!
The same sweetness added, sugar free:
- Instant coffee
- (Vanilla) Protein Powder (Recommendation: Quest Nutrition)
- Boiling Water
If you want a no-caffeine version, use a decaf instant coffee. That’s what I did!
How to make Whipped Coffee
- Add the instant coffee, protein powder and boiling water to a bowl
- Whisk or whip on high using a hand mixer
That’s it! Just go on whisking for about 3-4 minutes.
How to serve
The classic way to serve a dalgona is to make something like an iced coffee.
- Add about 1 cup of Ice to a glass
- Pour in ¾ to 1 cup of Milk (Dairy-free works too)
- Spoon out the whipped coffee on top
- Stir it with a spoon or straw and sip on!
Use hot milk as a base, or even top it on oatmeal, ice cream, baked goods like cake and brownies, just about anything!
But if you’re anything like me, eat that plain whipped bit straight out of the bowl!
Btw if you use a non-dairy milk like almond, coconut, soy or flax, you can make this Paleo, Whole30 and Vegan as required.
No hand-mixer alternatives
If you don’t have a hand mixer, you do have some other options:
- Stand mixer
- Milk Frother
- Regular Whisk
Those are in order of ease of use. If you use a milk frother or whisk as a no-mixer option, be ready to spend a little extra time.
You can also get an arm workout if you use the normal wire whisk – a good 15 minute one!
Can you store this?
Keep the fluffy, frothy whip in the fridge in an airtight container, and it’ll last even 4-5 days!
This creation truly is a wonder!
No foam? Here’s soms tips and tricks:
- Make sure to use boiling – or extremely hot – water, because this allows the coffee and protein powder to blend immediately.
- Whisk on high speed! I started off on a lower setting, but the froth just wasn’t happening. Upped the level and voila!
- Just continue to whisk! I stopped too early the first time, but trust me, just wait and it’ll work out.

What a genius idea to use protein powder instead of sugar! It results in such a delicious whipped topping. I’ve made this a few times and have started putting a pumpkin spice twist on it–pumpkin puree in the milk and pumpkin pie spice on top.
