Superb Sweet Potato Protein Brownies sweetened with the vegetable, protein powder, monkfruit and sweetener. This healthy dessert has no butter and is Vegan too!
Jump to RecipeThe chocolate and sweet potato combination in these brownies really worked out so well; The sweetness, the richness and the fudginess – it was all so perfect!
Another thing I love about these brownies? The crunch from the pecans. Optional pecans, but the crunchi is on another level, and a very highly recommended add-on for these high protein Vegan sweet potato brownies.
Ingredients for Healthy Sweet Potato Protein Brownies
These fudgy sweet potato protein brownies are made with a few healthy ingredients and no added sugars. No eggs or butter either!
- Cooled, Mashed Sweet Potato
- Chocolate Protein Powder needed for high protein brownie and also replaces most of the ‘sugar’. I used part whey-casein Chocolate flavor from Quest Nutrition, and part Whey Chocolate from Prozis for this recipe.
Dymatize ISO is another good option for the Whey. - Unflavored Protein Powder to replace some of the flour (and carbs) in the recipe for a slightly lower carb high protein brownie. Quest Nutrition Multi-purpose here.
- Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- Whole Wheat Pastry Flour – or a regular all purpose flour
- 1:1 Zero Calorie Sugar Substitute – I use Lakanto, to keep this recipe sugar free; (code HAYLSKITCHEN for a discount here too)
- Some Stevia Sweetener
- Non-fat Greek Yogurt contributes to the oil-free part of these high protein brownies since it adds the moisture, and also extra protein
- Almond Milk or regular milk
- Baking Soda
- Vanilla Extract
- Runny Almond Butter or Tahini (no butter or oil to keep this recipe low fat)
I recommend American Dream Nut Butter Caramel Crunch Cappuccino Almond Butter here; Its lower fat and higher protein. The link gives you a discount too.
- Chopped Pecans
Tips for Perfect Sweet Potato Brownie Recipe with Protein Powder
These protein powder sweet potato brownies are super easy to make, but here’s some tips to get it perfect every time!
- Use Garnet or Jewel sweet potatoes. They are orange-reddish on the outside, and mildly sweet.
- Make sure you let the sweet potato cool before continuing with the recipe or it will react bad with the yogurt.
- Use room temperature milk and yogurt;
This is so the wet ingredients and dry ingredients can mix well.
- Use Creamy Almond Butter or Tahini also so that it mixes well into the batter
- Don’t over-mix the batter!
Make sure you gently fold the dry mix into the wet to combine them.
If you over-mix it, the protein powder will make the fudgy sweet potato brownies tough, dense and gummy.
- Taste the batter and see if you need some extra sweetener. I’d recommend using stevia powder to maintain the consistency of the batter and have sugar free and healthy sweet potato brownies.
- Don’t over-bake the brownies or they might get tough; Remove when the tester/knife comes out mostly dry.
Underbaking a little is okay.
- For extra fudgy brownies, let some moisture be there on the tester – this should be at about 25 minutes.
- Don’t cut into the brownies too soon or they will be too soft and fall apart.
How to store Sweet Potato Brownies?
This high protein sweet potato brownie recipe keeps well for a meal prep dessert or post workout snack and is freezer friendly too!
Store vegan sweet potato protein brownies at room temperature in an airtight container for 1-2 days or in the fridge for a week.
To freeze healthy sweet potato brownies, individually wrap in plastic wrap and place in freezer-safe zipper bags or air tight container; They should keep for 2-3 months.
Alternatives for Healthy Sweet Potato Brownies
For the perfect healthy sweet potato brownies, I would highly suggest using the ingredients and brands I recommended; I do have some alternatives you can try. I haven’t testing them all, so I can’t say how your recipe might turn out.
- Whole Wheat Pastry Flour: All purpose flour or 1:1 Gluten Free Baking Flour, in the same amount by weight; not cups.
- Unflavored Protein Powder: 20g more Flour, but also reduce yogurt to 1¼ cup (281g)

- Almond Milk: Any other milk

To make sweet potato protein brownies Vegan, used plant-based protein powder, and coconut yogurt instead of Greek yogurt.
